We need a judicious people's history because the people are entitled to have their history whole not just those parts that will anger or embarrass them. . . . If that is asking for the moon then we will cheerfully settle for balanced history. 15 Writing in The New York Times columnist Bob Herbert wrote Mr. Zinn was often taken to task for peeling back the rosy veneer of much of American history to reveal sordid realities that had remained hidden for too long. ... What was so radical about believing that workers should get a fair shake on the job that corporations have too much power over our lives and much too much influence with the government that wars are so murderously destructive that alternatives to warfare should be found that blacks and other racial and ethnic minorities should have the same rights as whites that the interests of powerful political leaders and corporate elites are not the same as those of ordinary people who are struggling from week to week to make ends meet 16 Writing in Dissent Georgetown University history professor Michael Kazin argued that Zinn is too focused on class conflict and wrongly attributes sinister motives to the American political elite. He characterized the book as an overly simplistic narrative of elite villains and oppressed people with no attempt to understand historical actors in the context of the time in which they lived. Kazin wrote The ironic effect of such portraits of rulers is to rob 'the people' of cultural richness and variety characteristics that might gain the respect and not just the sympathy of contemporary readers. For Zinn ordinary Americans seem to live only to fight the rich and haughty and inevitably to be fooled by them. 17 Kazin argued that A People's History fails to explain why the American political-economic model continues to attract millions of minorities women workers and immigrants or why the socialist and radical political movements Zinn favors have failed to gain widespread support among the American public. Writing in The Chronicle of Higher Education Christopher Phelps associate professor of American studies in the School of American and Canadian Studies at the University of Nottingham wrote Professional historians have often viewed Zinn's work with exasperation or condescension and Zinn was no innocent in the dynamic. I stood against the wall for a Zinn talk at the University of Oregon around the time of the 1992 Columbus Quincentenary. Listening to Zinn one would have thought historians still considered Samuel Eliot Morison 's 1955 book on Columbus to be definitive. The crowd lapped it up but Zinn knew better. He missed a chance to explain how the social movements of the 1960s and 1970s have transformed the writing and teaching of history how his People's History did not spring out of thin air but was an effort to synthesize a widely shared shift in historical sensibilities. Zinn's historical theorizing conflating objectivity with neutrality and position with bias was no better. The critics would be churlish however not to acknowledge the moving example Zinn set in the civil-rights and Vietnam moments and they would be remiss not to note the value of A People's History along with its limitations. Zinn told tales well stories that while familiar to historians often remained unknown to wider publics. He challenged national pieties and encouraged critical reflection about received wisdom. He understood that America's various radicalisms far from being "un-American " have propelled the nation toward more humane and democratic arrangements. And he sold two-million copies of a work of history in a culture that is increasingly unwilling to read and consequently unable to imagine its past very well. 18 Writing in The New York Times Book Review in a review of A Young People’s History Of The United States volumes 1 and 2 novelist Walter Kirn wrote That America is not a better place — that it finds itself almost globally despised mired in war self-doubt and random violence — is also a fact of course but not one that Zinn’s brand of history seems equal to. His stick-figure pageant of capitalist cupidity can account in its fashion for terrorism — as when in the second volume subtitled “Class Struggle to the War on Terror ” he notes that Sept. 11 was an assault on “symbols of American wealth and power” — but it doesn’t address the themes of religious zealotry technological change and cultural confusion that animate what I was taught in high school to label “current events” but that contemporary students may as well just call “the weirdness.” The line from Columbus to Columbine from the first Independence Day to the Internet and from the Boston Tea Party to Baghdad is a wandering line not a party line. As Sarver observes " Voices is a vast anthology that tells heartbreaking and uplifting stories of American history. Kazin will be hard-pressed to charge Zinn with politicizing the intelligence here the volume offers only Zinn’s sparse introductions to each piece letting the actors and their words speak for themselves." 20 In 2008 Zinn worked with Mike Konopacki and Paul Buhle on creating A People's History of American Empire a graphic novel that covers various historic subjects from A People's History of the United States as well as Zinn's own history of involvement in activism and historic events as covered in his autobiography You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train . Zinn worked as the series editor for a series of books under the A People's History label. Fish and sea mammals for example contributed the bulk of the food supply of coastal peoples although the acorn was a staple for California Indians plant life and wild game especially the American bison or buffalo were sources for the Plains Indians and small-game hunting and fishing depending again on local resources provided for Midwestern and Eastern American Indian groups. These foods were supplemented by corn maize which was a staple food for the Indians of the Southwest. The procurement of these foods called for the employment of fishing hunting plant and berry gathering and farming techniques the application of which depended in turn upon the food resources utilized in given areas. Foods and other raw materials likewise conditioned the material culture of the respective regional groups. All Indians transported goods by human carrier the use of dogs to pull sleds or travois was widespread and rafts boats and canoes were used where water facilities were available. It appears to be a case of bottom-up history gone wild. The trend to view history from the standpoint of mass society is well established. Russell a historian and journalist has taken this approach much further. He asserts that the driving force behind many historical developments in history was provided by so-called marginalized groups outside the bounds of #x201C respectable #x201D society. So Russell provides a rapid run through some episodes and social movements in U.S. history beginning with the meeting of the Second Continental Congress. It is a comical rigorous and incisive social and cultural history of the United States spanning the early colonial era all the way to the Obama Administration. Skillfully utilizing a plethora of primary documents while astutely navigating and critiquing the secondary literature Russell is a Columbia-trained historian Russell takes us on a colorful edifying and enormously enjoyable tour of the underside of US history. Indeed taking off from Zinn's people's history Russell emphasizes that the "people" are neither homogeneous nor pure at heart. Russell in particular shows that contrary to standard liberal accounts history's drunkards prostitutes and general misfits have a lot more to do with advancing conceptual and material freedoms than has ever been acknowledged. 'A Renegade History' evokes Tocqueville's 'Democracy in America' insofar as it can either please or infuriate just about everyone. Conservatives will delight in Russell's demolition of politically correct but historically dubious truisms but just when they're convinced they've found an ally they'll be scandalized by Russell's celebration of radical anti-authoritarianism. Liberals will similarly be horrified by Russell's compelling and iconoclastic treatment of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. Indeed ideologues might fear this book. But those who value history cultural analysis and an amazing and brilliantly-told story will be elated. And the results are thrilling This folks is the REAL People's History. We start at the beginning. Part 1 goes from Colonial America and the omnipresent saloon to the Civil War. About colonial and early American history we learn that saloons and alcohol consumption were not only common but many saloons were owned very successfully by women and catered to white black slave and free. Despite efforts of states during and after America's independence to shut them down in the name of patriotism they kept going. The Civil War chapters may be the most controversial as they mount an impressive array of evidence to show that slaves may have had more freedom under slavery than as free men and women. Using interviews with former slaves speeches and textbooks during reconstruction and references to many secondary sources Russell illustrates the difficulties in creating a new work ethic among a people who were quite unaccustomed to "fending for themselves." Russell IS NOT saying that slavery was better than freedom but is pointing out that slavery often elicited less responsibility than freedom and as such slavery was often easier than freedom. Of particular importance to Russell's thesis is the idea that many vices flourished under slavery that had to be given up for freedom serial monogamy for instance was the norm during slavery where freemen were expected to marry and stay married. "Whore and the Origin of Women's Liberation" is another chapter that has the potential for controversy. The claim here is that "women of the night" are the best models the United States has for early independent women. Many not only owned their own businesses but were the richest people in their towns or cities. Many did not get married until they were older wore flamboyant clothing that we now accept as normal and pushed many other boundaries. All of this because they simply did not care about the "proper" mores. Lo and behold more of their mores became "acceptable" to future generations than the then-"proper" ones. Part II is called "How White People Lost Their Rhythm" and deals with four marginalized groups - African-Americans Irish Jews and Italians - and their contradictory struggle to have their own identity in a U.S. that often didn't want them. All of them found ways to be renegades - to live a bit outside the "proper" model that was often both expected of them and told they could never meet. The Irish largely developed the minstrel show not out of disdain but admiration for African-Americans' culture as a group "at the bottom" who had adjusted to that life and was less worried and hurried as a result. African-Americans of course developed Jazz along with Jews and Italians Jews and Italians are largely responsible for organized crime etc. When being forced to live outside the bounds of "respectability" there is a lot more freedom in what one can do. The third section - "Fighting for Bad Freedom" - has largely to do with the early and mid-1900's and the overall message that the "progressives" were every bit as morally repressive as anyone on the "right." The temperance movement eugenics a longing for fascism and its top-down planning schemes - all of these are found in plenty in the writings of "progressives" of the day. Lastly we come to the final section - "Which Side are You On." It starts with the Cold War and how it was in effect won by the young people who at every turn refused to obey the orders and dictates of the Soviet bloc. No jazz rock and roll zoot suits "loud" hair etc Yeah right This section also contains an interesting chapter on the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 70's where Russell notes ironically that icons such as King and Malcolm X exhibited a moral conservatism that often gets overlooked when discussing their contribution to history. In short this book was eye-opening and challenging from start to finish. One could dismiss Russell as simply a contrarian "revisionist" were it not for his bevy of evidence including ample primary quotes. Two small complaints about the book though first the notes are not organized in a footnote or endnote structure. The sources are listed at the end of the book but are not linked by markings to individual quotes or facts given in the book. Footnotes or endnotes would have been nice but would likely have made the book about 100 pages longer . Secondly Russell says throughout the book that he is not advocating for his subjects' immoralities - not recommending or condoning drunkness prostitution organized crime profligacy etc. I confess though that it is really hard to come away believing him on that. Quite often - when the talk was over lack of work ethic desire for material goods disdain for saving etc - I found myself concerned that maybe Russell was not seeing or was choosing to ignore the fact that many of those traits that he seems to celebrate may be directly tied to our current recession and overall financial difficulties. I understand that he SAYS he is not advocating these traits but he sure seems to revel in them. Anyhow those are small grievances for such an interesting book. This is a history that everyone except for grandma the local chaplain and those prone to conventionality should read. One of the reasons I bought A People's History is simply because I received a typical european education very focused on every aspect of main euro countries say Western ones with scarce notions about american history for instance I was taught about the Revolution and the Intervention during the WorldWarII but not much more and I was curious to learn something more specific especially about the epic figures of the Presidents and the Supreme Court so I bounced on this book with absolute no clue about Zinn's political view. I have just finished to read the 2003 edition and this is what I think about this huge book Pros 1 If you don't feel shocked and indignated by criticizing classic american heroes such as the Founding Fathers Lincoln etc or by talking openly especially about their mistakes and their bad decisions or policies the book is indeed a good approach to build a true critic sense for it makes you ask important questions and seek difficult answers and this is crucial in history teaching. This is indeed important I repeat. Cons 2 Zinn tried to write in a novelist-style concentrating on a topic and climating from the least to the most important things to say about while commenting and drawing consequences but at the same time forgetting completely about the time-line stream the thing that probably most gives sense to history itself. This can lead to a very frustrating reading when you try to find out what happens before and what next but you simply can't because here he talks about 1887 a line below about 1900 five lines below about 1870 and so on. 3 There are topics very well described along with most incomplete references last ones especially about the 'rich and powerful' facts who anyway still remain facts. So if you don't have a classic american education it's sometimes difficult to understand what's going on because everything's focused only and always on the same topics. Along with this you can't find a single note or precise account especially about statistics and statements so you can never be sure if you can buy what Zinn says. 4 The last chapters of the book tend to fall either in utopistic dreams or melanconic complaining and Zinn never gives a valid and possible alternative choice I'll give you just an example you can't criticize Clinton's policy of reducing the deficit if you omit what are the consequences in the long run of an increasing deficit caused by social either military expenses it's not so easy as Zinn often says to spend money on social programs and yet promoting an economic growth while creating new jobs In matter of fact even if you can't accept this on a political or moral point of view the economy grows and creates jobs as long as the corporations earn money so they can later invest. In conclusion I can say I was disappointed from the book from a pure technical historic approach but I consider anyway the book excellent and I really mean it to develop an independent and critic mentality for actual national american media don't help in this nor the history class the way is done in american schools all this not depending on which political party you believe in. Let us not fool ourselves here my friends every writer who writes about politics or history is going to have a bias and that bias is going to present itself in that author's work. I am a Republican born again Christian and I had no problem with Zinn's views simply because I am a realist. For years we were fed that nonsensical view of Christopher Columbus being a pious man coming to the Americas to bring salvation and religion to the indigenous people or simply just omitting the facts in American history studies that would show a very negative side of our founding fathers. THIS IS NOT UNPATRIOTIC I don't agree with everything Mr. Zinn has said in this book but it is refreshing to see history told more correctly so than in our public school system which are suppose to educate not indoctrinate. To my dear republican brethren out there do not feel that you have to put our fore fathers on a pedestal in order for you to feel patriotic and zealous for your country. The reason I can be a conservative Republican and still agree with a lot of what Zinn has to say is 1. I do not allow a party to think for me I always keep an open mind without an open mind we are no different then the followers of David Koresh and other cultic fanatics. 2. We have come a long way in this great country of ours and have much to be proud of regardless of your race or back ground. Let us not view things as liberal or right wing just be open minded and sift through the facts in different history books and find the truth somewhere in the middle. April 19 2004 By Alex Degus Rochester NY USA - See all my reviews This review is from A People's History of the United States 1492-Present Perennial Classics Paperback I have noticed a lot of critics saying that this book neglects to mention America's achievments that it is biased liberal radical revisionist communist..ect. But the point that these people are missing is that this book is intended to be biased. It is intended to be read as a supplement to the standard textbook American history. For my High Schol U.S. history course we read this book as well as a more traditional and general text. This allows us to view American history with a very open and critical mind. It allows us to question history as well as the historian reciting it. What Mr. Zinn is trying to do is give us an alternate perspective upon America. A perspective that many of us are blind to. This book is to read with an open mind. Not with a liberal or conservative one. Whether you agree with Howard Zinn or not I know I have disagreeded with him many times during the course of this reading as well as been in total concensus with this book provides insight into America's past that many people need to hear. One certainly shouldn't jump to the conclusion that this book is the true American history because it is a very specific and biased one. The book should be read with a traditional history in mind. But one should also not disregard the ideas that this text has to offer. Obviously it has flaws. It was writen by a singal person with his own perspective on America. But every history book I have ever read as a high school student that is many has its flaws and its bias. That doesn't invalidate what information it has to offer though. I believe this book should be a standard in classrooms to be read with a more standard U.S. text. Rather the U.S. Championship got its roots in WCW. Many of the ring's greatest names have staked claim to the U.S. Title during the title's early years including WWE Hall of Famers Sgt. Slaughter and Greg Valentine. With each great name that captured the championship came more prestige. In the late 1990s however the U.S. Championship was vacated more times than WWE fans could keep up with. As a result the championship lost a bit of its luster. Years later the U.S. Championship finally regained the glory it held in years past when competitors like Eddie Guerrero Booker T and John Cena fought over it in many memorable battles.
